MTA file, question 74 · Wrong answer in the source · Confirmed error

What is the part of speech of supply in: Each applicant is asked to supply a portfolio of work at interview.

Answer (before)A noun
Answer (after)A verb
ReasonThe source highlights “A noun” (highlight checked). But in “asked to supply a portfolio”, “supply” is a verb: it follows the infinitive “to” and takes an object (a portfolio). The correct answer is “A verb”.

Read: “The Olympic Games were held in Tokyo in 1964. It was a very important event for Japan. The bullet train (Shinkansen) was introduced and it took only four hours from Tokyo to Osaka. Life in Japan after the war was not easy, but the country developed quickly. Takeshi Honda was one of the engineers who worked on the bullet train project.” — Did people have an easy life after the war in 1945?

Question (before)Did people have an easy life after the war in 1945?
Question (after)Read: “The Olympic Games were held in Tokyo in 1964.
Options (before)True | False
Options (after)Yes, they did. | No, they didn’t.
Answer (before)True
Answer (after)No, they didn’t.
Arabic translation (before)هل عاش الناس حياة سهلة بعد الحرب في ١٩٤٥؟ (من قطعة القراءة)
Arabic translation (after)هل عاش الناس حياة سهلة بعد الحرب في ١٩٤٥؟ (من قطعة طوكيو)
ReasonThe source highlights “True” (highlight checked), but the Teacher’s Book says explicitly “false – Life wasn’t easy”, and the passage itself says “Life in Japan after the war was not easy”. The passage was added to the question, and the options became “Yes, they did / No, they didn’t” because the question starts with “Did”.

Answer (before)A noun
Answer (after)A verb
ReasonThe stored answer “A noun” was wrong: “supply” follows the infinitive “to” and takes an object, so it is a verb (same as p74). The answer was corrected; the question stays excluded as a duplicate of p74.

A paragraph can contain any number of sentences.

Question (before)The body of a paragraph should be ___ sentences.
Question (after)A paragraph can contain any number of sentences.
Options (before)1–1 | 2–3 | 5–6
Options (after)True | False
Answer (before)2–3
Answer (after)True
Arabic translation (before)الوسط (Body) في الكتابة يكون ___ جمل.
Arabic translation (after)الفقرة يمكن أن تحتوي على أي عدد من الجمل.
ReasonThe original study-sheet item (the body has 2–3 sentences) contradicts the Teacher’s Book: “a paragraph can contain any number of sentences”. It was replaced with the Teacher’s Book statement.

Question (after)I ___ comedy shows. I watch one every weekend.
Arabic translation (before)أنا ___ البرامج الكوميدية.

Arabic translation (after)هذه الأيام، منى ___ الأكل الصيني، لكنها ___ تحب الأكل الإيطالي.

Question (before)A: Did they have a party? B: Yes, they have.
Question (after)A: Did they have a party? B: Yes, they have. — Is B’s short answer correct?

The city ___ a lot between 1970 and 2020.

Question (before)The city ___ a lot in the last 50 years.

Arabic translation (before)المدينة ___ كثيراً في آخر ٥٠ سنة.
Arabic translation (after)المدينة ___ كثيراً بين ١٩٧٠ و٢٠٢٠.
ReasonWith “in the last 50 years” (a period up to now), British English normally uses the present perfect (has changed), so the past simple was questionable. The time expression is now a finished past period, where the past simple is correct.
